My military and government experiences have taught me, that you are only as smart as the language you can speak and understand; and the world~of~cyberspace and the ability to express yourself on this flat~screen makes it even harder sometimes to say what you mean.

As an English major and major geek, I have to say an "anacronym" would be a name that is inappropriate for a period of time. Like calling the comics the "funny papers" in 2006.

Hey I've got a much simpler idea. How about just NOT use abbreviations as a coutesy to all. Maybe it could be noted on one of the welcome pages concerning online etiquette.

Reality, no. Nobody is going to type out the names of every organization, strain, and chemical we deal with. It's a very informal medium (see the bouncing happy faces all over the place), not a peer-reviewed journal. We should be tolerant of people asking what the heck abbreviations and initialisms mean (I think we are tolerant of that and a lot more), but I disagree that we'd consider using those shortcuts a breach of netiquette.

If you are writing a LTE (Letter to an Editor) I would then write them out for the general public and VOTERS.
