A Central Point man was sentenced to jail Thursday for robbing an acquaintance who allegedly stole his medical marijuana.
Jeffrey Christopher Smietana, 23, pleaded guilty Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court to second-degree robbery. Ruling that Smietana played a minor role in the crime, Circuit Court Judge Patricia Crain sentenced him outside Oregon's Measure 11 to six months in jail.
Together with 22-year-old Brian Allen Vosburgh, Smietana beat up 19-year-old Bradley Lewis Maerz, also of Central Point. About a month earlier, Maerz had stolen Smietana's medical marijuana after Smietana invited him to smoke it and then fell asleep, said David Orr, county deputy district attorney.
When Smietana spotted Maerz on May 16 riding a bicycle with his 16-year-old girlfriend along Central Point's Scenic Avenue, Vosburgh struck the bike with his 2000 Dodge Neon, police said. With his belt, Vosburgh then started beating Maerz, who fell to the ground. The girl was punched and kicked before Smietana and Vosburgh stole her pink purse, Orr said.
