Now here is an HONEST company stating their goals and research for cannabis pharmaceuticals.
We see these companies patenting medicines and here is one that is at least forthcoming about those goals.
If cancer can be cured or prevented by cannabis products, then why shouldn't they be able to profit from it. Not everyone is capable of growing their own medicine.
The almost 10 minute video with Money TV interview was very interesting.
Here is the blurb for it...
October 24, 2008 President & CEO Richard Cowan and Director & Chief Science Officer Robert Melamede, Ph.D. spoke with anchor Donald Baillargeon of MoneyTV about the benefits of medical marijuana and the company's phytocannabinoid pharmaceuticals.
Personally I have no problems with commercial products that will WORK, but the point is will they have a problem with ME growing and making my own medicines. It works for me NOW.

Pharmaceutical Drugs Based on Cannabis
Pharmaceutical drugs have been developed which either contain or have similar chemicals as those found in the marijuana (cannabis) plant. Some researchers have used their understanding of how the brain processes cannabinoids (http://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/viewresource.asp?resourceID=161#cannabinoid) to develop drugs which follow the same pathways but work differently than marijuana. Pharmaceutical drugs based on marijuana are divided into four categories and listed below with the names, trade names, manufacturers, approval status, suggested medical use and cannabis-related properties. All drugs referenced are in pill form unless otherwise noted.
Drugs that contain chemicals taken directly from the marijuana plant (http://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/viewresource.asp?resourceID=883#direct)
Drugs that contain synthetic versions of chemicals naturally found in marijuana (http://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/viewresource.asp?resourceID=883#copy)
Drugs that contain chemicals similar to those in marijuana but not found in the plant (http://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/viewresource.asp?resourceID=883#synthetic)
Drugs that do not work like marijuana but use the same brain pathways (http://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/viewresource.asp?resourceID=883#brainpath)

Cannasat Therapeutics Inc. announces NRC-IRAP funding for CAT 210 12 February 2007 Cannasat Therapeutics Inc. is pleased to announce a contribution agreement with the National Research Council Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program ("NRC-IRAP") for pre-clinical research and development of CAT 210. CAT 210 is Cannasat's second product in development that targets the treatment of neuropathic pain (http://www.msrc.co.uk/index.cfm?fuseaction=show&pageid=1740) with cannabinoids. Pre-clinical studies for CAT 210 will be conducted at the Pain Centre at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). Early stage formulation work for CAT 210 will take place at the Cannasat's R&D facilities in Edmonton, Canada.
"We are very pleased to be sharing the costs of this project with NRC-IRAP for development of CAT 210 as part of our R&D efforts in developing novel cannabinoid drug products. Development of CAT 210 expands our pipeline of cannabinoid-based pharmaceuticals for neuropathic pain, a condition for which there is a large underserved market. We are also very excited to be working with the Pain Centre at McGill, one of the world's leading institutions in pain research," states David Hill, Chief Executive Officer of Cannasat Therapeutics.
Neuropathic pain arises from injury to the peripheral or central nervous system and is associated with trauma or diseases such as diabetes, herpes zoster, HIV/AIDS, and multiple sclerosis. Affecting approximately 26 million people worldwide, neuropathic pain is one of the most difficult forms of pain to treat - only 50 per cent of patients respond to current treatment options. As such, there is a large unmet need for new therapies.

(MarijuanaNews note from Richard Cowan: The second time is “the charm.” Last year, we tried to do a similar deal, but it fell through as a result of the market crash. I am really looking forward to working with Steve Kubby and Dr. Robert Melamede in building a patient-oriented medical cannabis research company. There will be more announcements soon.
As one might guess, working on this merger has taken up so much of my time that I have not been able to write about the issues and opportunities confronting the cannabis reform movements. I hope that I can get back to writing soon.)
